I wish I could say that my experience with Janet was as positive as the other reviewer. Her actual visit to my house was fine - she was friendly and tried to solve the problems my infant daugher and I were having. She was unable to, but that doesn't actually bother me. The rest of the medical profession was likewise unable to diagnose our problem for a couple of months, which was eventually tracked down to a strange bacterial infection of my milk ducts.
Janet did admit that she didn't know what was going on with us, and I do appreciate that. However, my problem with Janet was that she told me that there were a couple of avenues to explore, and that she would send me an email with the contact details of an MD who's specialty may have been helpful, and some more information on another possibility. It is now more than three weeks since our appointment, and it is more than two weeks since she cashed my check ($95), and I am yet to hear from her.
I find her having left a new mother, in intense pain and with unfulfilled promises, to be unprofessional and insensitive. My GP eventually managed to solve my problem about a week ago. If I had sat around waiting for Janet, I would still be taking Codeine several times a day in a effort to get the pain to subside enough to allow me to sleep.

Janet was friendly and confident sounding, but her method did not suit us or our baby at all. She basically forced our daughters' head into the breast very hard. It seemed stressful and did nothing to encourage our daughter to breastfeed. She was gone in an hour and we don't really feel like we got any help for our $95.
Our daughter is almost a year old now and never did drink from the breast (we had to pump) despite other lactation consultants' trying to help - but the other LC's methods were much more gentle and encouraging.

Janet Fishstrom Dombro, IBCLC, Lactation Consultant, 408-205-1234, is great. I got her name from Maternal Connections at El Camino Hospital (another great resource). She came to my house when my baby was 3-4 days old and helped me out a lot with my nursing problems (latch, etc.). She brought a super sensitive scale with her so we could tell how much milk the baby was actually taking in. She did an exam of my baby's mouth and confirmed that it was on the small side (thus all our problems). It was the best money I ever spent. I went from a 9.5 on the stress meter, down to a 3 within one hour. She charged $80 for a one-hour
visit. She lives down in San Jose, but she gladly drove to my house in Redwood City with a minor charge for gas. I highly recommend her.
