KENDO HELPS PARKINSON'S DISEASE. I am a 60 year old man who has had Parkinson's disease for about 10 years. With a little medication and DBS surgery my Pakinson's symptoms are considered fairly moderate. I have been practicing Kendo for about 6 months and have found it to be remarkably effective in reducing my Parkinson's symptoms. Parkinson's, a chronic, progressively degenerative disease attacks certain areas of the brain that concern muscle control and movement. The practice of Kendo vigorously "exercises" many of the same areas of neurophysiology that Parkinson's degrades. The improvements include better balance, better reaction time, increased fluidity and naturalness of movement, increased mind/body coordination and increased strength of voice.
Even though my rate of learning Kendo is slower than normal, the highly qualified instructors are consistently patient and attentive. In addition , all of the other students are very helpful and supportive. I've practiced at other Kendo dojos (Palo Alto, Union City)and found the quality of people attracted to Kendo to be consistently very impressive. Like Tai Chi, Kendo can be classified as a "nonviolent" martial art; the movements learned in Kendo do not directly translate to actual combat. Kendo is pure art and discipline.
If you know anyone afflicted with Parkinson's who still has moderate capability of movement, please encourage them to investigate Kendo. You will do them a great favor.

Mountain View Kendo Dojo offers a unique opportunity for all to participate in this Japanese based sport. Focused on tradition, respect and confidence; Kendo is a sport for any age and background. Through guided instruction, participants will not only gain a disciplined workout, but also find more personal confidence as well as enjoy a more refined sense of coordination both physically and mentally. This is even more profound in the children who also participate. Please feel free to stop by to observe anytime we practice. We welcom all questions as well. Domo Arigato Gozaimashita.
