I believe that this school promotes a great idea! Many individuals in California speak Spanish and many Spanish speakers are not taught Spanish correctly. What a great idea! In looking at the statewide ranking, this school does a lot better than many other public schools in Redwood City.

Let's face it, bilingual people are the future of our state and its economy. Kids who are learning both English and Spanish will be those who gain an edge on everyone else. The academic program of dual immersion really helps kids prepare for the real world of the future, and Adelante does a good job of making sure kids are ready for that world. Some of friends' kids are now doing really well in high school after attending Adelante. While the extracurricular activities are a little lacking, they have great potential. Adelante's had a district champion boys basketball and girls soccer team and has a very good possibility of putting together a very good boys soccer team. Art and music are highly valued. Parents are always welcome if you talk to your child's teacher first and can be seen all over school during the school week.

If you are an English-speaking household and want your children bi- or multi-lingual, I can recommend the elementry school. Extras (sports, music) are lacking, as they are throughout the district. Parent invlovemnet could be higher--the participation in our drive was less than 1/3 of families, though we did raise $40K to supplement art, PE and music.

The test scores do not, in the least bit, reflect the quality of this school. My daughter finished Kindergarten last year her progression with Spanish is impressive. The parents and school communicate very well and keep all others informed. There's a lot of school pride and spirit! Parents play a huge role in this school's (their child's) success and on the safe environment, having a lot of hands on activities, of which many are coordinated by the parent groups. I highly recommend Adelante to English speaking children who are advanced and may need a challenge as they enter Kindergarten.

Adelante Elementary school offers a wonderful opportunity for children to learn in 2 languages: Spanish and English. All of the academic subjects are taught, but predominantly in Spanish for the first years and gradually the amount of English increases until it is about 50% of each in the 4th and 5th grades. This is the best time for children to learn a foreign language as they can do so with no accent. The teacers are very caring and capable. The academics are top-notch and there are volunteers who do 'Art in Action' with the students. There is a music program for students in grades 2-4 followed by instrumental music in 5th grade. Parental involvement is high. There are several culturally interesting celebrations for the school community during the year. Parents volunteer to help at these events and often cook to raise school funds.
