The acedemics are great. They have all types of after school programs, too.

They have a very interesting program where students get to explore art, music, drama, journalism, computer, etc. They also have programs for accelerated math, where 7th graders can do high school math. A large chunk of the students end up in this program. Overall good academic environment.

The parent involvement is one of the many aspects of the outstanding school. Bret Harte also has a dedicated staff (exceptional mathematics department) who act in the best interest of the students at every level. I also much mention Mr. Donald McCloskey as the principal that is making an impact that will last for years.

We are now on our second child attending this school. The synergy between teachers, staff and parents is terrific. The teachers keep us well informed of our childrens' status and they teach them how to be well prepared for high school. All are available for extra help. The school emphasizes positive leadership and self esteem awareness, peer counseling, and high academic achievement. There is a 'motivational' feeling throughout the school. There are many after school activities and the kids are encouraged to participate in them as much as possible without disrupting their school work.

The academic program of Bret Harte is above average within San Jose Unified. However the school does not have enough quality teacher to carry out the program. Availability of music, art, sports and other extracurricular activities are limited due to lack of volunteers.

Overall a really high quality school. Only public middle school in SJ Unified where kids are not required to wear uniforms due to positive, calm atmosphere. Many kids want to do well academically - about a third make honor roll each semester. Teachers mostly very experienced, enjoy their jobs, know how to engage kids and challenge them. Many parents at this school really care about how their kids are doing and show up in force for school events. Extracurriculars were thin a few years ago but have improved. I don't know new principal, but school community would not suffer mediocre leadership kindly.
