My child graduated from Ocean Shore and went to a highly competitive private high school where she is thriving. It's true that choices offered to middle school grades are limited, largely due to the small school population; however, the quality of education is excellent and the kids receive highly individualized attention during this critical period of early adolescence. The focus is on critical thinking skills instead of rote learning. There are plenty of opportunities for leadership, although some kids aren't ready to assume them and they're not forced to. Kids are guided and supported to assume responsibility for their own learning. This works remarkably well for the majority of them. As with any school, it's not right for everyone and there are trade-offs. This is the school for families whose educational priorities are learning to think critically and work cooperatively, nurturing the whole child, and community service.

School focuses on more than just basic education -- small group activities, cross-grade activities, many field trips and other 'hands on' learning activities. Requires parent involvement to enable all this, and there is a very large degree of parent involvement expected and that occurs as a result.

The elementary program works fine, but the middle school component of this K-8 is undersupported. There is little choice and the students do not have leadership opportunities.

This is what school should be about - strong teaching in the basics and strong exposure to things like art and music. The parent involvement at this school makes all the difference as they help out in the classrooms, making special presentations to the kids on special topics (e.g., local scientists come to the classes to teach about their area of expertise), and help with fundraising and administration. The school is also physically beautiful and the staff is very supportive and knowledgeable. This is the school to choose if you want to be an active partner in helping your child be his very best.

A private school education in a public school. Focused parent involvement and a dedicated administrator make this school unique. The school remains small enough for a hands-on feel. I have two daughters here who love the school as do we.

The strength of this school is parent involvement. Every parent is involved which allows this public school to do the many activities that it does.

Ocean Shore school is a wonderful place where attention is paid to the intellectual, social, and character development of the children. Development of critical independent thinking is encouraged. The extensive parental involvement is good for the children, as they get more personal attention. It is also good for the teachers, as they get help, and can therefore devote more time to teaching, and provide each student with more individual and small group instruction. Finally, it is good for the parents and families, because it promotes parental involvement in their child's education, increases parent's awareness of their child's experience, and helps them to network with other families, contributing to a wonderful sense of community. All of these factors facilitate education of the children. I am very happy with our choice to send our child to Ocean Shore School.
