These guys have a really extensive selection including from Italy and Spain which are my two favorite foreign wine countries. The staff are very helpful and extremely wine-savvy though perhaps a bit overbearing one time when we went in. We've always found something good here.

A great wine store for both extremely expensive high end wines and reasonably priced everyday wines too. They have a great wine club too.

I have been a customer for many years. Their whole staff is very customer service oriented, and if you are honest with them about the price point you want they will do their best to steer you to something that excels at that price. While I am not a novice in general I am for some types of wine and they are always willing to educate me without overwhelming me. A novice need not be afraid to walk in and ask questions. I regularly deal with Jim Barr but others are always very very helpful.

This is a nice-sized store with a good variety of affordable and more expensive wines, so you can go here for weeknight wines as well as special occasion ones. I just picked up a gift for a friend and got a great $8.99 bottle they were able to get on special (normally about $15). The people in the store are the actual buyers, so you can talk directly to the person who buys the French, California, or Italian wines. (I heard one of them talking in French to a customer one time I was in there.) So, they can really help you out on some good recommendations because they're focused on that wine area/country. I found out about the special $8.99 buy from one of the associates, so don't be afraid to ask questions when you're in there.
They do tastings on Thursdays and Saturdays, too.
