"We had a wonderful experience storing our car and trailer at Brett’s. He was very responsive and hospitable. We weren’t familiar with the neighbor app but found it online and saw good reviews with Brett. We trailered our boat to Maine to cruise around Casco Bay and Midcoast and it was helpful and reasonable to store with Brett. Thanks so much Brett!"

"Daniel was amazing! We bought a full sized school bus to renovate into a tiny home before discovering that conventional storage places refuse to store them as they are "eye sores" sight unseen and in good condition! We were incredibly grateful to find Neighbor and Daniel who was able to watch our bus for us over the winter while we searched for a more permanent place for us to work on our permanent home. Unfortunately the night I arrived it was raining and I ended up slightly off the roundabout gravel driveway I was aiming for onto more squishy dirt than I should have been while making my corner alone in the dark which ended up leaving a couple tire impressions on the yard that I felt absolutely horrible about but Daniel again was amazing about everything! We needed a place to go afterwards and when our family fell through Daniel came to our rescue again with a contact who had a contact and now our bus has a permanent home where we can work on it too! The entire experience was just amazing and we would absolutely do it again in a heartbeat if we needed storage!"

Types of boat storage

Outdoor storage for boats in Portland, Maine, provides the perfect blend of convenience and protection. Unlike indoor or covered storage, outdoor storage offers a unique freedom and ease of access for boat owners. It allows for quick preparation and departure for those spontaneous fishing trips or serene sunset voyages.

Here are a few categories of boat storage available:

  • Self Storage: If you prefer to have full control over your boat's care, self storage is a great choice. This typically involves renting a space on a residential property where you can park your boat. For example, you might choose a spot in someone's driveway or backyard. You'll enjoy the liberty to access your boat whenever you want, providing greater flexibility for those impromptu boating adventures.
  • Boat Yards: These are a superb option for those who appreciate a community setting. Boat yards often have other boaters nearby, making it a great place to meet fellow seafarers. Residential boat yards in Portland often sit in quiet neighborhoods, offering an ideal mix of privacy and community involvement.
  • Dry Stack: Dry stack storage refers to vertically-stacked, multi-level racking systems. These are typically found in commercial properties, but some residential options might be available. Dry stack storage keeps boats off the ground, which can help protect against flooding and other weather-related damage.
  • Wet Slips: This type of storage keeps your boat in water at a private dock, jetty, or pier. This can be an excellent option for those with waterfront properties. The ease of simply untying a rope and setting off into the open water can be a true luxury for any boat owner in Portland.

Each of these options provides unique benefits to boat owners, from flexibility and convenience to protection and community. Considering these factors can help you find the best outdoor storage solution for your boat in Portland, Maine.

Choosing outdoor boat storage

Choosing the right boat storage space is a crucial step for any boat owner in Portland, Maine. The dimensions of the location, its accessibility, and the safety of its surroundings are prime factors to consider.

  • Storage Space Size: Consider the size of your boat and any towing equipment. Remember to account for the extra space you might need to move around your boat, transport it in and out of the area, or store related equipment. The space should comfortably contain the boat's length, width, and height without cramping.
  • Accessibility: Ensuring easy access to your boat is paramount. The opening hours of the storage location should accommodate your schedule, allowing you to use your boat whenever you wish. Also, consider the ease of access to the water - a storage space close to a launch site is ideal. Lastly, the location should be easily navigable by your vehicle, allowing for trouble-free transportation of your boat.
  • Location: Look at the location's proximity to your residence and to your preferred boating sites. In addition, evaluate the safety of the neighborhood. A secure area will offer peace of mind that your precious watercraft is protected when you're not around.

Remember, the ideal boat storage location is one that combines sufficient space, flexible access, and a secure, conveniently located setting.

Climate considerations

In Portland, Maine, outdoor boat storage requires careful attention to the area's climate. Portland experiences considerable seasonal variation, making it crucial to prepare your watercraft for storage accordingly. During peak summer, average high temperatures can soar to 79℉, posing a risk of overheating and sun damage. To protect your boat in these conditions, opt for well-ventilated storage spaces and use protective covers to shield against UV rays.

Come winter, temperatures can plummet to an average low of 13℉. Extremely cold conditions can cause extensive damage to your boat's engine and hull. To avoid such issues, it's recommended that boats stored outdoors in winter be thoroughly winterized. This process includes draining systems, adding antifreeze, and thoroughly covering your boat to protect it from snow and ice.
