The best way to do this is by completely draining the water lines and water heater tank. Any water left in your lines or tank could freeze and expand during the winter, causing them to burst.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"draining-the-water-heater\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Draining the Water Heater<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To drain your water heater, close the inlet valve near the heater to prevent water from flowing to the tank. Next, turn the water heater off and give it time to cool down. After several hours, remove the anode rod or your water heater&rsquo;s heating element near the bottom of the heater tank and allow the water inside of it to drain out.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also need to open your water heater&rsquo;s pressure relief valve to ensure all the water in the tank drains out.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"draining-the-water-lines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Draining the Water Lines&nbsp;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, turn off your camper&rsquo;s water pump and open all of your kitchen and bathroom faucets. Leave the faucets open while the water inside the lines slows to a trickle and then disappears. If you&rsquo;re lucky enough to have a washing machine and dishwasher in your travel trailer, you&rsquo;ll also need to drain those.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"step-4-winterize-your-camper-plumbing-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 4: Winterize Your Camper Plumbing System<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to your RV plumbing system, you have <\/span><b>two choices for winterizing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/how-to-self-service-your-car\/how-does-antifreeze-work-9e3550b21cda\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antifreeze<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or compressed air.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Both methods will help protect your pipes against freezing throughout the winter, and each has advantages and disadvantages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While your <strong><em>plumbing systems<\/em> and <em>holding tanks<\/em> are the most prone to damage<\/strong> if they aren&rsquo;t winterized correctly, you won&rsquo;t want to skip this step (even despite the risk involved).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>*Note: If you use antifreeze to winterize your camper&rsquo;s plumbing system, keep in mind that you will have to blow out the antifreeze again at the end of the winter (or before you use water in the camper again).&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"option-1-using-antifreeze-to-winterize-your-campers-plumbing-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Option #1: Using Antifreeze to Winterize Your Camper&rsquo;s Plumbing System<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antifreeze can help prevent your lines from freezing and ensure that any water remaining in your plumbing lines will not freeze. Before you add antifreeze, you must <\/span><b>bypass the water heater<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as the antifreeze that trickles into the hot water tank can cause irreparable damage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pro Tip for Bypassing Your Water Heater: <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some campers come with a water heater bypass already installed. If you don&rsquo;t know whether or not yours has one, check with a professional before adding antifreeze!
