A little prep now saves you a lot of time and effort later, when you’re not dealing with corrosion, dead batteries, or rodents in your tailpipe. Here are nine storage tips so your classic car starts clean the day you pull it back out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classic Car Storage in 9 Steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Give yourself a couple of hours and work through these steps in order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Add fuel stabilizer and let it circulate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Standard gas can last 3–6 months before it starts to degrade. Even if you’re not sure you’ll be storing for that long, fuel stabilizer is a good bet. It can usually protect your engine for at least 2 years.

First, add stabilizer<\/strong> to the tank according to the instructions, then fill up with gas<\/strong>. Doing it in this order helps the stabilizer mix in. You’ll want a full tank to minimize any air space where condensation can collect and rust out your tank.

To get rid of any condensation that’s there, run the engine<\/strong> until the tailpipe stops dripping. This shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes, and it allows the stabilizer to circulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Change the oil<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Used oil contains combustion byproducts and mild acids, and that chemistry starts working on your bearings and cylinder walls as soon as the car sits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s why lubrication specialists<\/strong><\/a> recommend changing the oil before any storage stretch<\/strong>, whether it’s weeks or months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Top up all other fluids<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Top up your coolant, brake, power steering, and washer<\/strong> fluids. Full reservoirs leave less air space for moisture to accumulate and create problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you need coolant, use a mix of half antifreeze and half water. This will keep your engine block from freezing, even at temperatures as low as -45°F. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re already full up, and you’re in a cold-weather state, check your coolant’s freeze point<\/strong> with test strips or a hydrometer. Then find out how cold your storage space gets<\/strong> to make sure your coolant can handle it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Deal with the battery<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A car battery keeps draining even with the engine off. If the charge is too low<\/strong> for too long, a buildup of lead sulfate crystals can eat into its capacity<\/strong> and cranking power.

The fix is<\/strong> hooking up your battery to a smart maintainer<\/strong>. This feeds in a current but doesn’t overcharge the battery because it monitors your voltage and adjusts automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your storage space doesn’t have a power outlet, pull out the battery<\/strong> and store it at home. It needs to be upright, in a cool, dry spot, on a maintainer.

When you’re removing your battery, disconnect the negative terminal first<\/strong>, then the positive one, to reduce the risk of a spark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Inflate your tires<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sitting under the car’s full weight, tires can develop flat spots, which cause heavy vibration when you’re driving.

To keep this from happening, fill your tires by 5–10 PSI<\/strong> over the factory specification on the door sticker. Never exceed the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Use chocks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Release the parking brake<\/strong> because brake rotors and drums can rust to the pads over a long time in storage.

7. Wash and wax it<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Before your car goes into storage, give it a full wash, including the undercarriage<\/strong>, to get any road salt off.

Then wax the exterior<\/strong>. Bird droppings, bug residue, and road tar will etch through your clear coat if they’re on it for too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, vacuum the interior<\/strong>, clear out any food, and clean up any stains<\/strong>. Pests like rodents can work their way in, eating through wires in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Seal the intake and exhaust openings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To help keep pests out, stuff steel wool or a clean rag into the exhaust pipe and air intake<\/strong>.

Your exhaust pipe is exactly the type of protected tunnel rodents are looking for. Once they’re in, they’ll chew through whatever they find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave a note on the steering wheel<\/strong> reminding you to pull out those plugs before you start the car back up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Use a breathable car cover<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A fitted cotton or flannel cover keeps dust, UV light, and stray debris off the paint. Don’t use a plastic tarp<\/strong> directly against the car’s finish, because it traps in moisture and can cause tiny scratches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a long storage stretch, pick up a sheet of poly plastic<\/strong> from the hardware store and lay it down before you drive in<\/strong>. Concrete draws moisture up from the ground, and over months, that moisture can work its way into the undercarriage unless there’s a barrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
