Rodeo Events

There are two main categories of events at a professional rodeo: roughstock and timed. A cowboy’s score in roughstock events, such as saddle bronc and bareback riding, depends on his performance as well as the performance of the animal. In timed events, like tie down roping and steer wrestling, cowboys and cowgirls compete against the clock and each other. Below is a list of common rodeo events in both categories.

Saddle Bronc Riding

This roughstock competition is the classic rodeo event. A rider begins with his spurs over the bronc’s shoulders. During the ride, the cowboy will be scored on his spurring action, control, length of his spurring stroke, and how hard the animal bucks.

If the rider falls off the horse, loses footing, touches the animal or himself with his free hand, or drops the rein before 8 seconds have passed, he will be disqualified.

Bareback Riding

Another roughstock event, bareback riding packs some of the most action. Once again, the rider must start with his feet above the horse’s shoulder. During his 8 second ride, a cowboy must hang on to a leather rigging with one hand and keep the other hand from touching himself or the animal to avoid being disqualified.

The cowboy will be judged on his control and spurring technique, with the horse’s performance accounting for half of his potential score.

Bull Riding

Riders are not required to spur in this roughstock event. A bull rider’s only requirement is to remain on the animal for 8 seconds and keep his free hand from touching himself or the bull during the ride. The score will be half-based on the rider’s performance and half-based on the bull’s performance.

Tie Down Roping

In this fast-paced timed competition, a cowboy ropes and ties down a calf as quickly as he can. The calf is given a head start while the cowboy chases it on his horse After roping the animal, the contestant runs to it and ties any three of its legs together. After signaling a finished tie to the judge by throwing his hands in the air, the cowboy then returns and remounts.

Steer Wrestling

A steer wrestling contestant, called a bulldogger, uses brute strength and strategy to successfully chase down and tackle a huge steer in this timed event. After giving the animal a 10 second head start, the bulldogger chases it down and grabs it by the horns. The clock stops for the event when the bulldogger has tipped the steer over on its side and all four legs are pointing in the same direction.

Team Roping

The team roping timed event includes two cowboys, one called the header and one called the heeler, working together to rope a steer. The header ropes the horns, neck, or “half head” of the steer, while the heeler trails behind to rope the steer’s back legs after the header is successful. Once both cowboys are finished and their horses are facing each other, the clock stops.

Barrel Racing

In this high-speed timed event, cowgirls race in a designated pattern around three barrels in the arena. The clock stops and starts as the rider enters and exits the arena. Knocking over a barrel does not mean a contestant is disqualified, but it will add a 5 second penalty to her time.

Rodeo Storage for the Off-Season

Watching rodeos is a guaranteed good time, but nothing compares to taking part in the action. Rodeo-ing is a full time gig for many people in Utah and around the country. Roping and riding is a great pastime, whether you go pro or not, but you’ll need a lot of gear to do it. For starters, you need your hat, chaps, spurs, saddle, rope, horse trailer, and more. While this gear will be put to use constantly during rodeo season, you’ll need somewhere safe to stash it during colder months. If you have all the gear, but not enough space to store it, try using Neighbor to find cheap rodeo storage near you.
