Top 20 Safest Cities in Utah

Top 20 Safest Cities in Utah (2018) - Neighbor Blog

Utah is one of most family friendly and safest states in the nation, often ranking in the top 10. But what are the safest cities in Utah?

Utah has a lot of different types of towns. Many people live in the suburbs of Salt Lake County or in one of the smaller, but connected towns in Utah County. Outside the Wasatch front, there are many rural towns across the state.

Here is a list of the 20 safest cities in Utah. This report was gathered from the latest FBI Uniform Crime Report and put together by Safewise. This particular list has excluded cities with particularly low populations that may have skewed the data, as well as cities that did not submit complete crime reports to the FBI.

#1 Highland/Alpine (Lone Peak)

  • Population: 28,862
  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.14
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 6.24
  • Total crime: 2.22% violent, 97.78% property

Number one on the safest cities in Utah list Highland. Highland was named by Mormon pioneers who felt that its rolling hills reminded them of their native Scotland. Highland is far enough off the I-15 to feel like you’ve escaped to a quiet and clean little sanctuary.

Together, Highland and Alpine make up the Lone Peak area of Utah, and it is an extremely desirable location to live inif you can afford one of the beautiful houses that is.

#2 Santa Clara/Ivins

  • Population: 15,107
  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.20
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 7.88
  • Total crime: 2.52% violent, 97.48% property

Having spent many a long weekend here in the sunshine (shout out to mom and dad), I feel personally qualified to tell you that living in Ivins/Santa Clara, Utah is like being on a permanent vacation. Plus, this Southern Utah gem is one of the safest cities in Utah.

Nestled up next to the towering red cliffs of Snow Canyon State Park, it is a perfect temperature almost year round, except in the summer when it is slightly boiling–or baking I should say, since it is quite dry.

  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.26
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 14.04
  • Total crime: 1.85% violent, 98.15% property

Named after two Spanish Franciscan friars looking for a trail from New Mexico to California, Spanish Fork is a safe city located at the entrance of the winding beauty of Spanish Fork Canyon. It makes the list as one of the safest cities in Utah County.

  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.48
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 7.31
  • Total crime: 6.53% violent, 93.47% property

Taking a short break from Davis County (man, you guys sure are safe over there), scenic Saratoga Springs is a relatively new development, and has grown quite quickly. Because of the new homes, and the relatively higher socio-economic move-ins, this is one of the safest cities in Utah.

Saratoga Springs sits on the western shore of Utah Lake, with a nice view of the Wasatch range at a greater distance than those cities located at the base of the mountains.

  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.58
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 8.79
  • Total crime: 6.59% violent, 93.41% property

Kaysville’s fun fact is that it is home to the well-known YouTube channel, “What’s Inside.” It also has some charming neighborhoods that are nicely planned and very safe. It is also located in Davis County, north of Salt Lake City. Besides being one of the safest cities in Utah, it also regularly ranks as one of the best places to live in Utah.

Farmington has one of the nicest shopping centers in Utah. I should know, because I have definitely spent some dollars there. Also located in Davis County, this city clearly enjoys a good time because it houses the Lagoon Amusement Park. It was ranked one of the best cities to live in by Money Magazine in 2011. Not a bad choice if you’re looking!

#11 American Fork/Cedar Hills

  • Population: 39,028
  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.61
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 21.98

This city also claims its own canyon, called American Fork canyon. It is in between these mountain cliffs one can drive the Alpine Loop, coming out on the other side of Mount Timpanogos, the second tallest mountain in Utah. These winding roads through forests of alpine trees and evergreens are unforgettable and a main attraction of Utah. Don’t miss the vibrant colors of fall up there either. It is dazzling and a perfect backdrop for posting on Instagram, as long as your smile looks just right.

  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.66
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 22.55
  • Total crime: 2.92% violent, 97.08% property

Payson brags fields of green and open space, a nice change from the busier suburbs of other areas in Utah. However, as home prices increase in North Utah County, many families and newlyweds are picking Payson. It’s another one of the safest cities in Utah.

#13 Orem

  • Population: 95,640
  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.68
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 25.59
  • Total crime: 2.66% violent, 97.34% property

Good old Orem. Home to Utah Valley University and many young families, this place is vibrant. It has a good mixture of quiet, restful family neighborhoods and college apartments that never rest (don’t worry, the sound of loud music and laughter won’t reach your snoozing household past midnight—hopefully).

#14 North Salt Lake

  • Population: 20,572
  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.68
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 19.01
  • Total crime: 3.58% violent, 96.42% property

Do not confuse North Salt Lake with South Salt Lake, which is among the least safe parts of Utah. North Salt Lake has some incredible (and quite large and expensive) houses, many of which were built on the hills and mountains hanging above Salt Lake. They have amazing views of the city, the Wasatch range, and the Great Salt Lake.

#15 South Jordan

  • Population: 70,226
  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.75
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 22.01
  • Total crime: 3.43% violent, 96.57% property

I like to think of South Jordan as the city of parks, with almost 30 scattered throughout it and each more picturesque than the last. Located near the Jordan River, it has great areas for fishing and nature walks. South Jordan is growing economically as well, with tech companies like Ivanti moving there. It’s also one of the safest cities in Utah, particularly the Salt Lake valley.

  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.85
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 20.32

Springville is as pleasant as it sounds. Named Utah’s Art City, it holds the fun Art City Days event. Come here to explore the Museum of Art, and feel the power of imagination and creativity. Don’t have any artistic talents? That’s okay! They’ll still let you live here if you ask nicely.

#17 Clearfield

  • Population: 30,783
  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.94
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 21.57
  • Total crime: 4.37% violent, 95.63% property

When the Hill Air Force Base was established, the city of Clearfield began to grow steadily. The native people originally called it the city of wind and sand, and it was the last one to be established in Davis County. Did I just say Davis County again? Wow, way to go guys! Go give the cities at the bottom of the list some pointers. (No offense, bottom-of-the-listers. I think you’re great).

#18 Logan

  • Population: 50,767
  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 0.98
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 16.62
  • Total crime: 5.92% violent, 94.08% property

Utah State University is located in Logan, as well as one of the earliest LDS temples ever built in Utah. This city is part of Cache county and located on the Logan River. Logan lies in a valley between the mountains, and combined with the young student population, makes this one of the 20 safest cities in Utah.

  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 1.05
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 16.91
  • Total crime: 6.18% violent, 93.82% property

Bountiful is one of the larger cities on this list, but it’s still one of the safest cities in Utah.  It is north of Salt Lake, and houses many who commute to Salt Lake regularly. Filled with nice homes and neighborhoods, it is no wonder people like to retreat here after a long day’s work in Salt Lake.

#20 Roy

  • Population: 38,167
  • Violent crimes per 1,000: 1.13
  • Property crimes per 1,000: 18.37
  • Total crime: 6.13% violent, 93.87% property

A fun fact about Roy is that it was the first city in Utah to establish a bank branch, which was successful enough to lead the way to establishing more in Utah. Now we can withdraw money just about anywhere! Located in Weber County, this city also grew a great deal during WWII with its close proximity to Hill Air Force Base and other military depots. Feel free to go and visit the Hill Aerospace Museum while you’re visiting!

As you have hopefully deduced from my exemplary descriptions, Utah is full of beautiful and interesting cities. It is a state covered in natural beauty, with a powerful religious heritage and legacy of equality, neighborly kindness, and productivity.

Is your city one of the safest cities in Utah? And do you agree with the rankings?

Getting to Know a Neighbor Near You

Speaking of security, there are times in our lives–whether it be a change of residence, new family arrangements, traveling, college, etc.–when we find ourselves in need of securely storing items that are valuable to us. Finding a safe, inexpensive, or convenient place to store our things can be immensely difficult. Finding all three at once is pretty much impossible…or was until Neighbor came around.

If you want to get to know us, we can help you get to know a neighbor that has some secure, extra unused storage space for any and all of those things you don’t have space for–from fancy speedboat (jealous!) to shoebox of collected treasures from your childhood (that may or may not be worth a fortune one day depending on how famous you are).
