Yes! Neighbor lists top-rated storage facilities and vetted local hosts, with over 600,000 customer reviews. Every Neighbor host is ID-verified and backed by up to $1M in liability coverage. For extra protection, renters can also opt into a Property Protection Plan at checkout. While renters aren’t required to obtain a renter’s insurance policy before booking, we highly recommend adding on a Property Protection Plan for added peace of mind. We also encourage renters to use their best judgment when booking and visiting a space. Read reviews, check host ratings, and look for spaces that are climate-controlled, security camera-monitored, and located in lower-crime Chicago neighborhoods, like Edison Park, Forest Glen, and Norwood Park. In Chicago, there are 34 security-camera-monitored locations. There are an additional 2 locations with on-site attendants who can keep a close eye on your items.

It depends on what you’re storing! Refer to Neighbor’s Storage Unit Size Guide for more information on the recommended space size for your belongings.

Climate-controlled spaces offer temperature control (55-80°F) and humidity control (50-55% or lower). Extreme temperatures mean climate-controlled storage is highly recommended, especially for items such as important documents, artwork, and certain furniture.

For more information on the scenarios where climate-controlled storage is recommended, refer to this guide. To filter for climate-controlled spaces in the Chicago area, use Neighbor’s filters. Click the “Features” tab, select “climate-controlled,” then press “show spaces.”

Policies will vary from host to host. However, certain items are prohibited platform-wide (as stated on Neighbor’s Terms of Service agreement), including explosives, fuel, hazardous or flammable materials, pesticides or other toxic chemicals, waste of any kid, firearms or ammunition, drugs or illegal substances, stolen goods or other contraband, perishable food items, any item that emits fumes or a strong odor, boats not stored properly on a trailer, and any other items specifically identified by the host as expressly prohibited.

Most hosts will list these restricted items in the “About this space” or “Policies” section of their listing. Note: At no point in time is a renter allowed to work or live in the rented space.

On Neighbor, payment is hassle-free! Just create a Neighbor account and connect your preferred payment method (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover cards are all accepted). Once you select a space and submit a reservation request, a preauthorization hold will be placed on the funds in your account until the reservation is approved. Once approved, your card will automatically be charged at the time of approval. Thereafter, you’ll be charged on the first day of each successive monthly rental period. Most reservations are renewed on the same day each month (E.g., if a reservation started on the fifth day of the month, you’ll be charged on the fifth day of each successive month). Once you’ve removed your items and cancelled online, automatic payments will stop.

When you find the right space, click "Reserve space" to submit your request. You'll be prompted to enter what you're storing, a preferred start date, and your payment information.

Hosts have 24 hours to respond to your request. If you rent an instant-book space, your reservation will automatically be approved. Otherwise, you’ll be notified via email, SMS, and push notifications (if you have the Neighbor app) when a host responds to your pending request. Currently, 1 locations in Chicago are instant-book.

Yes! To make sure you get the space you want, we recommend submitting a reservation request ASAP. However, we understand that sometimes you need a few more details before you’re ready to place a reservation. In that case, reach out to your host via Neighbor Messages — a safe, secure platform designed specifically for hosts and renters to communicate.

Once your reservation is approved, you’ll receive all the details needed for a successful move-in via email, including the exact listing address. Note that some commercial locations will automatically display the listing address prior to approval.

From there, all that’s left to do is to schedule a move-in time. You can refer to your host’s move-in calendar (if available) or reach out to the host at your convenience via Neighbor’s in-platform messaging system: Neighbor Messages. Here, you can set a date and time that works for your schedule.

Many Neighbor hosts grant renters 24/7 access–the ultimate convenience for renters who need to access their items around the clock. To view an individual host’s access policy, click on the desired listing and scroll down to the “Access” section.

Our hosts are known for going above and beyond for their renters. If you need to pick up or drop off belongings at a specific time of day (or at the last minute), most hosts will be willing to accommodate these requests.
